October 2003
Charlene Miller was invited to join the
U.S. Council on Competitiveness.
The Council on Competitiveness is a non-partisan, non-profit organization whose members are
corporate chief executives, university presidents and labor leaders. The members are dedicated to setting
an action agenda to drive U.S. economic competitiveness and leadership in global markets. The Council
helps shape the national debate on competitiveness by concentrating on a few critical issues including
national and regional innovation, competitiveness and security, globalization, workforce development and
the benchmarking of U.S. economic performance against other countries.
Ms. Miller participated in last year's annual conference held from October 28-30, 2003. The conference
agenda was "Challenges in Globalization: National Innovation and Security". Council Chairman,
F. Duane Ackerman, Chairman and CEO of BellSouth Corp., presided at the daylong session.
The results of a recently completed survey on corporate recognition of the importance of security and
competitiveness were presented to the 200-plus attendees. Three panels were featured, highlighting the
issues surrounding "Strategies for National Innovation, Competitiveness and Security, and
Global Economic Growth".
Samuel Palmisano, Chairman and CEO of IBM Corporation, and Wayne Clough, President of the
Georgia Institute of Technology, launched a 12 to 18 month "National Innovation Initiative".
According to Mr. Palmisano, the Council's efforts in 2004 will culminate in a "National Innovation Summit"
to discuss the findings and recommendations of a broad-based steering committee and to forge a national
innovation strategy.
